F Murray Abraham and Eric Roberts, what fine adversaries they make in this movie. This is such an underrated film, it is worth watching simply for these two outstanding actors alone.

A very underrated movie..

I thought this ending "duel" was very disapointing. In the end it was two people wailing away, with two hands on the hilt. When the chips were down, they were brawling. Meaning there was no skill in the win. Hardly the best ending to a film about fencing.

I first seen this on HBO around 1992 and always liked it. I have the DVD that I purchased a couple of years ago on Ebay. This could have a great film instead of just a good film. I am not a big fan of the cheesy dance number.

Good choreogrphy of the fencing scenes. Decent plot. What is not to like? Takes me back a few decades to when I used to fence. Was lucky and had world class Olympic instructors. I wish my knees still worked so I could fence again.

Not a great movie..

I competed in and taught saber fencing for a decade or so. I also choreographed many live saber fight scenes and performed them as well (all on my channel here). This is some pretty terrible choreography and execution here, unfortunately. 😟 The direction, framing, and editing are pretty much bollocks as well. 🤢 What a shame. Obviously, staged combat isn't the same as realistic competition, let alone a "duel to the death", but this just isn't very good. Maybe the actors had no training (yes, I recognize Eric Roberts). Maybe there wasn't enough time. IDK. Bob Anderson's work with Elwes and Patinkin was far, far superior. Same with the work on Rob Roy (Neeson, Roth). Even Ridley Scott's "The Duellists" was absolutely wondrous.

It would have been better to have had the double doors swing at the end with Eric Roberts character walking out.

I can't believe I never heard of this movie. I've seen the Best of the Best movies so many times back when, but never saw this one or even knew it existed. Guy's got guts going after Mongul like that.

One of my favourite fencing related films.

It's my very first time watching this scene, and it's great. But, it could have been so much better; The mirror could have broken in a different way, instead of by the tip of a fencing sword; Why the sparks? Both of them deciding to swing fencing swords two handed? C'mon!

The character Eric Roberts plays has so many sides, and is so conflicted and able, that he is a compelling anti-hero. Murray Abraham plays a more straightforward character, but with such artistry. One of the best films ever, about the human condition, and about how in the modern world we feel adrift and need to find some sort of framework to give our lives meaning and content.

Whatever it is these guys are doing it sure isn't fencing , it's amature Hacking of the most horrific kind. There is a big difference between sword play and fencing.There is no slashing away incoherently in fencing ,it is an artful sport where the goal is to stick your opponent in the heart not run around swashbuckling away like a rogue pirate.
